Vanessa Toulmin is Research Director of the NFA, and former Wingate researcher at the University of Sheffield and is one of the NFA personnel. She comes from a Lancashire showland family, and completed her PhD researching the social history of travelling showpeople, part of a three-year project at the University's National Centre for English Cultural Tradition (NATCECT) in 1997. This is a national research facility for the study of folklore, customs and language. She was awarded the Chancellor's Medal in 1997 for outstanding achievement. Her publications include:
