Visual Delights

Visual Delights is a tri-annual event held in conjunction with the National Fairground Archive at the University of Sheffield and the Le Prince Centre at the University of Leeds. Organised by Dr Vanessa Toulmin and Simon Popple, it covers themes on the history of visual culture and popular entertainment. Three conferences have been held since 1999, 2002 and 2005 and various aspects and themes are covered. Visual Delights IV is scheduled for 2009.

The three day events cover the differing social, cultural, technological and economic contexts that the printed and projected image occupied in the late Victorian the Edwardian Era. Incorporating both academic and non-academic historians, collectors and performers, the conference organisers always attempt to bring the worlds of photography, film and mass visual culture to a wider and more inclusive audience. Each conference has a underlying theme for, example Visual Delights 2 celebrated the Bamforth Company of Holmfirth and Visual Delights 3 was held in association with The Magic Circle. Visual Delights 4 will be based on the theme of Visual Empires.
