Health and Safety Executive - Vocabulary Portal

The Archive has been working closely with the Health and Safety Executive since 2002. The project brief is to present and maintain a clear vocabulary of fairground riding technologies - in terms of adult fairground machines - and to supplement this with up to date information listing the population of any ride in a structured fashion.

The project has a variety of aims to help present both a safer image of fairgrounds and to provide a pro-active mechanism to help the Health and Safety Executive promote a systematic and current maintaining of all rides with regard to potential problem areas. The clear sighted and consistent vocabulary helps to present a better understanding of the business, and this better understanding of the business in turns feeds into a more rigorous and tightly controlled media profile. The 'pro-active' or preventative aspect of the project is such that any discovered faults on any type of fairground machine (or particular manufacture of machine) can then be taken forward to all other active fairground machines that may be susceptible to a similar fault. The provision of this resource by the Archive allows the Health and Safety Executive and the fairground operators to stay one step ahead of any potential problems.

The amount of work put into this project has been substantial. One only has to consider a fairground ride like the 'Twist' - which has been constantly manufactured by a variety of companies since 1960 and is such that their are over 250 machines in active service - to appreciate the complexity of the information.

The project between the Archive and the Health and Safety Executive is ongoing.
