This section of the website looks at the cultural and historical context of the Sheffield Jungle. Included here will be essays and features that examine the history of entertainment that led up to the popularity of events like the Sheffield Jungle, and how entertainment of this sort has moved out of fashion.

Articles will be presented in broad subject classification as follows:

  • 'Menagerie History' will look at the phenomenon of the travelling Menagerie, the wider traditions of animal exhibition and how the Sheffield Jungle emerges from these traditions.
  • 'Exhibition Culture' will look at the rise, through Victorian Times, of the fascination with exhibiting all manner of strange things in strange places.
  • 'Popular Culture and Ethics' will attempt to document Menagerie culture and the relationship with captive, domesticated and exhibited animals as represented in popular culture. Essays on moral and ethical issues will be included here.
  • 'Sheffield Educated' will document how the Sheffield Jungle, and other Menagerie activities, have informed and contributed to the teaching and museum sectors of the city.
