Site and Change

This section of the website will focus on the City of Sheffield, looking at the changes up to and after the year of the Jungle (1910). It will have a primary focus on the ground occupied by the Sheffield Jungle as part of the slum clearance activities at the turn of the decade, though it will also cover other areas of the city that the Jungle mentions.

Articles will be presented in broad subject classification as follows:

  • 'Local History' will examine the space of the Jungle and its interaction with the city from a local history perspective, through memories, local resources and other enquiries. We encourage members of the public to get involved and look forward to hosting your contributions.
  • 'Architecture' will look at the phenomena of the Jungle taking over part of a city, transforming buildings and environments - creating a disjointed history and the lingering ghosts.
  • 'Archaeology' will look at the understanding of the Sheffield Jungle (and similar events) gained via evidence, detailing specific research in regard to sites and structures utilising animal use. This will also include a report of activities around a possible archaeological dig of the Jungle site.
