We will remain open on Wednesday 8th June, however during this day we will close for lunch and morning break.

The reading room is open to all visitors with desk space for up to eight people and a seated area for visitors wishing to browse our books and printed resources. This page outlines how to organise your visit to the NFA and the scale of charges for our various services.

Opening times - Monday to Thursday: 09-30 to 16-30 (Please note - Thursday by appointment only)

Booking - you can drop in any time between Monday and Wednesday but it may be helpful to book in advance. This will enable us to advise you on any materials that we can to provide for your specific research.

Resources - The Archive has a reading room containing a core stock of books, journals and pamphlets. Electronic resources available to all users include our dedicated image database (with full printing facility), family history databases, and journal indexes. University of Sheffield members are also allowed access to web-based electronic resources. Our other resources can be requested prior to visiting and be available for viewing on arrival - these are all listed on our website in the holdings section.

Guidelines for using the NFA

Your visit - to make your visit to the NFA as pleasant as possible we ask all users to observe the following:

  • please provide a form of identification with you to present at the Library turnstile
  • no food or drink permitted in the Archive
  • pencils only to be used (these can be borrowed)
  • all mobiles and electronic devices must be switched off
Using World's Fair newspaper in the Archive - we ask for the following guidelines to be observed:

Due to the very fragile nature of our early World’s Fair newspapers we will instruct all visitors to use our microfilm versions. If you require access to the World’s Fair newspaper for issues dated up to 1950 then we ask you to inform us of this in advance of your visit. A microfilm reader with an attached printer will need to be booked prior to your visit. Microfilm readers have attached printers and users wishing to make copies are asked to purchase a University of Sheffield copy card - these are priced at £1-00 and enable copying at 6p per A4 black and white sheet.

For post-1950 World’s Fair, users are able to browse copies directly in the Archive in boxes of 1 year at a time. We permit users to make digital copies of articles from these newspapers within copyright clearance guidelines.

Copying of materials

Articles - The NFA holds a wide range of printed material such as books, journals and unique ephemera, and appreciates that these are used by large numbers of the user base. At the same time the NFA is committed to working within existing copyright laws regarding the copying of any printed work kept within its collections.

The NFA has photocopying facilities which are charged at the standard University of Sheffield rate for copying material. External users are required to purchase a copycard for the fee of £1-00, and this can then be credited for photocopying at any of the value-loader machines alongside the copiers. At present copy costs are 5p per black and white A4 copy for students and staff, and 6p per A4 copy for external users. Copying in colour is available at a higher cost.

Fragile material that is unsuitable for photocopying will be copied using a digital camera. The NFA charges a flat administrative fee of £5-00 for using the camera - this covers capturing the images and transferring them from the memory card. Printing costs are standard:

costs for University staff and students: 5p per sheet black and white, 50p per sheet colour, double costs for A3 work

costs for external users: 6p per sheet black and white, 65p per sheet colour, double costs for A3 work

If a user wishes to capture material using their own digital camera then we can permit this. All users are required to keep within copyright guidelines when copying material and, in addition, any users creating their own digital copies are further required to sign a copyright form stating that they will not create further digital files or multiple copies from their digital file(s). The NFA will identity mark any digital files created of material that has a high a visual value (posters, ephemera) to prevent unauthorised publication or exhibition.

Images - The NFA database holds approximately 100,000 images. These images can only be supplied in a printed format, and are available as single printed images or a smaller image with an associated database record. These images are for personal and study use only, and, once supplied, are not allowed to be copied or distributed in any way. In addition, it must be noted that any images held by the NFA as part of general collections that are not the copyright of the NFA cannot be supplied for users under any circumstances whatsoever.

costs for University staff and students: 5p per sheet black and white, 50p per sheet colour

costs for external users: 6p per sheet black and white, 65p per sheet colour

If you require images at a higher resolution for a specific project then we will be happy to talk to you about costs and procedures.
