Moving Image Material
Film, video, DVD and digitised moving image material has been a part of the National Fairground Archive collecting policy since its inception. The difficulties in offering this material for consultation is something we are trying to overcome through processes of creating new listings and converting moving image footage to a more accessible format.
Recent work has seen the full cataloguing of our VHS video and DVD collections, and this is available for reference and use in the reading room. Videos include early home movies from pioneers such as Dave Homer, Terry Darby and Paul Angel, all of who worked with the VHS format through the early 1980s. We also have VHS videos on historical fairs such as Hull and Boston, alongside footage of steam rallies including a rare commercial film of the White Waltham Steam Fair. Recent programmes that have seen an NFA involvement, such as the television series "Carousels and Candyfloss", are also available for viewing.
Early formats of film footage such as 16mm and 8mm are collected by the NFA but are not available for viewing. We do however have a commitment to reformat such film into digital standards such that it can be viewed on computers within the reading room. We are presently working with some rare footage from the Noel Drewe collection, as well as a large selection of family films featuring prominent London show families through the 1960s. This material is listed in the link below, however please observe the 'format' column to assess which material is unavailable for general viewing.
Please see below for a downloadable excel spreadsheet listing our moving image material.
