Book and Pamphlet Collections

The National Fairground Archive has an extensive book collection covering all aspects of showland life and entertainment subjects allied to the fairground and its origins. Our core collection continues to grow and encompasses works from all around the world, including works in English, French, Russian, Italian, Dutch and German. We endeavour to collect hard-to-find and often privately circulated publications meaning that our collection is continually growing. Our subject scope is broad and includes all works on fairs, circuses and entertainment forms that have evolved around the early fairgrounds. The material is available for browsing in our new reading room, though some items of a particularly delicate or rare nature are kept out of public view but can be requested in advance, or on the day, for viewing.

In addition to our main collection we also hold the Circus Friends' Association Library, the details of which can be downloaded by accessing the links below. We also have a dedicated book collection donated by Malcolm Airey which covers a broad mix of classic and historical entertainment and 'showbiz' subjects.

Book details can be accessed through the University of Sheffield online library catalogue STAR from the links below - please note that collection title 'National Fairground Archive' can be specified in the search.
