1970s Steam

The images below came as part of a slide selection from the Ron Newbold collection - they reflect Ron's interest and support of the 1970s rally scene.

By the 1970s the preservation movement was well established, having commenced in the 1950s following the decline of steam powered rides, engines, and the demise of the fairground organ. Rally locations began to establish themselves as yearly events, and preservationists began to emerge with a tender love for the huge showman's engines. This passion co-existed with the movement for preserving vintage equipment from other areas, especially industry and agriculture. But what is apparent is that even preservation does not stand still - projects fall into inactivity and disrepair, while machines and engines are exported to foreign markets.
