Lionel Bathe's Galloper Images
Lionel Bathe's collection of colour and black and white
negatives is a jewel in the crown for the Archive. A brief introduction
to the collection was created here,
but this gallery is an opportunity to indulge in one of Bathe's favourite
subjects - the British Galloper. Bathe's photographs were primarily in
colour, at a time when this was not the normal practice (and very expensive).
Subsequently his pictures have a surreal edge in that you look twice,
tricked into thinking they are later than they are, then you observe the
dress codes, the somewhat more 'ordered' way of life in the post-war period,
and you fully appreciate the value of these images.
The captions are noted with the FAGB Galloper codes
developed by Stephen Smith and Kevin Scrivens for their Gallopers listing
publications.
