Orton and Spooner Collection

Orton and Spooner were major ride-builders and decorators based at Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Their worked spanned early carving through to construction of 19th Century Shows, classic Scenic Railways, up to the design and building of 1930s thrill rides such as the Ark and Dodgem.

The collection within the Archive formed part of the David Braithwaite Collection, kindly donated by his family. Braithwaite always intended to write a history of the company to sit alongside his earlier works documenting Savages of King's Lynn and the general subject of Fairground Architecture. The work was never completed. Though Braithwaite attained a substantial and important part of the Orton and Spooner archive, the holdings that survived and reached his collection were sadly far from complete. In addition, much of the material includes plan and blueprints, making conservation and digitsation a costly and time-consuming issue.

These galleries are created using the photographs from the Orton and Spooner collection, kindly funded by the Fairground Association of Great Britain.
