The following images come from the collection of David
Braithwaite, kindly donated by Joanna Braithwaite. David was an active
author and researcher, whose profession as an architect led him to an
interest in the design and structure of fairground rides and the tober
itself. David's images strive to capture more expressive aspects of the
fairground alongside structural dissections of build-ups and pull-downs.
This collection covers David's involvement with the
famous 'White Waltham Steam Fair' taking place at Shottesbrooke Park over
the August bank holiday of 1964. David had some involvement with producing
a film of the event and set to work taking photographs of both the event
and the making of the film. It is uncertain as to the final whereabouts
of this film, or whether it was ever shown and/or distributed at a commerical
level. The pictures show once again how Braithwaite stepped 'outside of
the ordinary' to capture moods and atmospheres.
